The ‘County History of Cumberland’ records that racing was certainly taking place at Burgh in the last years of the seventeenth century. In 1684 the Lowther family gifted the Barony Cup to be contested at Burgh. These Barony Cups were gifted each time a Lord of the Barony came of age, and the earliest surviving Cup was gifted by the Right Honourable Richard Lord Viscount Lonsdale and contested at Burgh on 10th August 1712. The Barony Cup was contested again on Thursday 3rd May 1804 to celebrate William Lowther, the new Earl of Lonsdale, and was won by Mare owned by Mr Mayson Hodgson. The next time it was competed for was on Wednesday 9th April 1845 to commemorate William, the new Earl, when it was won by Lady Eleanor for Mr George Oliphant. Run again in 1873 when The Crow won, and on Monday 30th April 1877, when Sir George Henry was celebrated, the Cup was lifted by Lady Brown for Mr R Hodgson. The last time a Barony Cup was contested was on Tuesday 28th August 1883. In that year the Cup was changed for a shield valued at 100 Guineas and carried the inscription ‘The Burgh Barony Cup, the gift of the Right Honourable Hugh Cecil, Earl of Lonsdale’ and was won by Harmony, owned by Mr Thomas Robinson. The final meeting took place on Wednesday 29th August 1883.
